Plantain Seed
Aliases: Che Qian Shi, Xia Ma Yi Zi (also known as Plantain Fruit, Toad's Coat Seed).
Flavor and Nature: Sweet in flavor, cold in nature.
Meridian Tropism: Enters the Liver, Kidney, Lung, and Small Intestine meridians.
Medicinal Part: This herb consists of the dried mature seeds of Plantago asiatica L. or Plantago depressa Willd., both belonging to the Plantaginaceae family.
Appearance: Plantain Seed typically presents as oval, irregularly oblong, or triangular-oblong seeds, slightly flattened. Each seed measures approximately 2mm in length and 1mm in width. Its surface varies from yellowish-brown to dark brown and is marked with fine wrinkles. One side features a distinct grayish-white, concave navel-like hilum. The texture is hard. It has a faint aroma and a bland taste.
Dosage and Administration of Plantain Seed
Preparation: For oral administration, 9-15g is typically prepared as a decoction. It is highly recommended to enclose the seeds in a gauze bag during decoction. This prevents the release of mucilage, making the tea easier to drink and improving palatability.
Processing (Pao Zhi): Impurities are first removed, and the cleaned Plantain Seeds are then stir-fried using the traditional salt-processing method. They are heated until subtle popping sounds are heard, at which point a small amount of salt water is sprinkled on them, and they are continued to be stir-fried until dry.
Functions and Indications of Plantain Seed
Functions: Plantain Seed is traditionally known to clear heat, promote urination, and unblock painful urination. It also drains dampness to stop diarrhea, improves vision, and resolves phlegm.
Indications: This herb is primarily used for conditions such as painful, difficult, and urgent urination associated with damp-heat (often referred to as hot painful urination), generalized edema and distention, diarrhea due to summer-heat and dampness, red, swollen, and painful eyes, and cough due to phlegm-heat. Its diuretic properties and ability to improve renal function have been explored in modern research (Renal protective effects of Plantago asiatica L. on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. PMID: 29555621).
Traditional Combinations with Plantain Seed
1. When combined with Akebia Stem (Mu Tong), Talc (Hua Shi), and Dianthus (Qu Mai), Plantain Seed can be effectively used for painful, dripping, and obstructed urination caused by damp-heat pouring downwards into the bladder.
2. For diarrhea stemming from summer-heat and dampness, it is often combined with Elsholtzia Herb (Xiang Ru), Poria (Fu Ling), and Polyporus (Zhu Ling). Its anti-inflammatory actions may contribute to its efficacy in managing such conditions (Anti-inflammatory activity of Plantago asiatica L. extracts in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. PMID: 28424687).
3. To address red, gritty, and painful eyes, Plantain Seed is frequently paired with Chrysanthemum Flower (Ju Hua) and Cassia Seed (Jue Ming Zi). Its historical and current applications in ocular health are well-documented (Plantago asiatica L. in the Treatment of Ocular Diseases: A Review of its Traditional Uses, Phytochemistry, and Pharmacology. PMID: 30141973).
Precautions and Contraindications for Plantain Seed
