Pearl
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Pearl, often referred to by aliases like True Pearl (真朱, *Zhen Zhu*), Pure Pearl (真珠, *Zhen Zhu*), Clam Pearl (*Bang Zhu*), or Luminous Pearl (*Lian Zhu*), holds a revered spot for its unique health benefits. It's truly a gem not just for adornment, but for wellness too!
Pearl's energetic qualities are described as sweet and salty in flavor, and cold in nature. It primarily influences the Heart and Liver channels, making it a powerful ally for emotional balance and eye health.
The medicinal part of Pearl used in TCM comes from the nucleated pearls formed within the pearl sacs of various bivalve mollusks. This includes species like the pearl oyster (*Pinctada fucata*, *Pinctada martensii*) and freshwater mussels such as the Triangle Sail Mussel (*Hyriopsis cumingii*), Wrinkled Pond Mussel (*Cristaria plicata*), and Anodonta Mussel (*Anodonta woodiana*).
These precious pearls typically present as spherical, oblong, oval, or rod-shaped, with a diameter ranging from 1.5 to 8 mm. Their surface can be off-white, light pink, pale yellowish-green, or light blue, appearing semi-translucent, smooth, or slightly uneven, with a characteristic iridescent luster. They are hard in texture, and when broken, reveal distinct layers. Pearl is odorless and tasteless, making it easy to incorporate into various remedies.
Pearl's Usage and Dosage
For internal use, a typical dosage ranges from 0.1 to 0.3g, often incorporated into pills or powders. For external applications, an appropriate amount is used as needed.
Preparation Methods:
- Pearl: Simply wash and air dry.
- Pearl Powder: Clean pearls are finely crushed, then processed using the traditional water levigation method (*shui fei fa*) to create an ultra-fine powder. This ensures maximum purity and efficacy.
Pearl's Therapeutic Effects and Actions
Pearl is renowned for its ability to calm the spirit, settle tremors, improve vision, clear superficial eye opacities, detoxify the body, and promote tissue regeneration.
Primary Indications: It's commonly used for conditions such as heart palpitations, restless sleep, and insomnia; pediatric convulsions and epilepsy; blurred vision or corneal opacities; and slow-healing sores or ulcers.
Pharmacological Effects: Research has shown that pearl extract can exhibit inhibitory effects on isolated rabbit intestines, hinting at its complex pharmacological actions.
Pearl's Contraindications
It's always important to use TCM remedies with awareness of contraindications:
- As stated in *Ben Cao Jing Shu*: "Do not use in conditions not primarily caused by fire-heat."
- From *Ben Cao Xin Bian*: "If internal toxins from a sore are not completely cleared, using Pearl prematurely to regenerate tissue can ironically hinder proper healing."
