Morphological Characteristics: It is cone-shaped, slightly curved, hollow, approximately 15 cm long with a base diameter of about 5 cm. The exterior is rough and grayish-white or yellowish-gray, full of small pores and some shallow grooves. The structure is firm. The cross-section is hollow, with an outer wall about 6 mm thick, gray-white, fine in texture, with coarse medullary tissue inside. It has a slight fishy smell and bland taste. Quality is best when clean and of a rough, short shape.

Usage and Dosage of Niujiao Sai
Internal Use: Decocted, 1 to 3 qian; can also be used in powdered form.
Preparation: The hard core inside the horn is extracted when the cow is slaughtered, soaked in water for 3 to 5 days, scraped of any attached rotting flesh, sawed into small segments of 2 to 3 cm, split open, and sundried until odorless. It is then crushed and roasted with iron sand until yellow, with vinegar lightly sprayed while hot.
Functions and Indications of Niujiao Sai
Functions: Stops bleeding and dysentery.
Indications: Used to treat rectal bleeding, nosebleeds, uterine bleeding, leukorrhea, dysentery, and diarrhea.
Compatibility of Niujiao Sai
① To treat excessive uterine bleeding in women: Two liang of Niujiao Sai (burned to ash), two liang of alum (burned until juice is gone), one liang of acorn, one liang of Equisetum, and one liang of Chuanxiong. Crush the ingredients into a thin powder. Unconstrained intake, in two qian amounts, adjusted with warm wine (PMID: XXXX).
② To treat leukorrhea: Niujiao Sai (burned until smoke stops), Fritillaria (seven times salted water immersion, skin removed). Crush into even portions. Take on an empty stomach, in two qian amounts, adjusted with wine (PMID: XXXX).
③ To treat sudden bleeding: Burn one piece of Yellow Niujiao Sai to a red color. Crush this into a fine powder. Cook a thick broth of fermented black soybeans, mix two qian amounts, heavier cases three times a day (PMID: XXXX).
