Kochia Fruit
Also Known As: Broom Cypress Fruit, Earth Sunflower, Earth Wheat.
Flavor and Nature: Pungent, Bitter, Cold.
Meridian Tropism: Kidney and Bladder Meridians.
Medicinal Part: The dried mature fruit of Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad., a plant from the Chenopodiaceae family.
Characteristics: This herb typically appears as a flattened spherical, star-shaped fruit, measuring 1-3mm in diameter. It's covered by persistent perianths, which are grayish-green or light brown on the surface, surrounded by five membranous wings. On the dorsal side, there's a slightly raised point marking the fruit stalk scar and 5-10 radiating veins. When the perianth is peeled off, a membranous, semi-transparent pericarp is visible. The seeds are flattened ovoid, about 1mm long, and black. It has a faint aroma and a slightly bitter taste.
Kochia Fruit Dosage and Administration
Dosage: 9-15g for internal use. For external application, use an appropriate amount to decoct into a wash for steaming and cleansing.
Preparation: In autumn, when the fruits are mature, the entire plant is harvested, dried in the sun, and the fruits are threshed off. Stems, leaves, and other impurities are removed.
Kochia Fruit Actions and Indications
Actions: Clears heat and promotes diuresis (resolves dampness), expels wind and stops itching.
Indications: Commonly used for painful, difficult urination (dysuria), vaginal itching with discharge, urticaria (wind rash), eczema, and generalized skin itching. Its traditional use for various skin conditions is further supported by research demonstrating its ability to inhibit mast cell-mediated allergic reactions, a key mechanism in conditions like urticaria and eczema (PMID: 20692340).
Kochia Fruit Combinations
1. For treating damp-heat in the bladder leading to difficult urination: Kochia Fruit is often combined with Akebia Stem (Mu Tong), Dianthus Herb (Qu Mai), and Mallow Fruit (Dong Kui Zi), as seen in formulas like Difuzi Tang (Kochia Fruit Decoction) from *Jisheng Fang*. Contemporary pharmacological studies support Kochia Fruit's diuretic properties, showing its ability to promote diuresis and inhibit aquaporin 2 expression, which may contribute to its efficacy in addressing difficult urination (PMID: 22285172).
2. For treating severe headache with swelling (Lei Tou Feng Zhong) and unconsciousness: Kochia Fruit (Luozhouzi) is ground together with fresh ginger, then taken with hot wine to induce sweating, which is believed to bring recovery. (From *Sheng Ji Zong Lu*).
3. For persistent bloody dysentery: Five liang of Kochia Fruit, combined with one liang each of Sanguisorba Root (Di Yu) and Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin), are powdered. Each dose is one fang cun bi (a traditional measurement), taken with warm water. (From *Sheng Hui Fang*).
Kochia Fruit Contraindications
Contraindications: Avoid use in individuals without internal damp-heat or those experiencing excessive urination. Modern research indicates that Kochia Fruit extract demonstrates potential in inhibiting allergic responses and mitigating allergic contact dermatitis, aligning with its traditional use for skin itching and rashes (PMID: 29505872).
