Shrimp: Benefits and Uses

Flavor and nature: Sweet in taste, warm in nature.

Channels (meridians): Liver, stomach, and kidney channels.

Parts used: The whole body or flesh of long-armed shrimps such as the Japanese freshwater shrimp Macrobrachium nipponense (de Haan).

Morphology: Relatively short and stout body, 40โ€“80 mm, with blue-green and brown markings. The head-thorax is robust, with a triangular rostrum at the front. Five pairs of head appendages, eight pairs of thoracic appendages, seven abdominal segments, six pairs of pleopods, the sixth pair forming the tail and tail fins with the last abdominal segment. The tail abdomen bears two short movable spines on the dorsal side. Smelling fishy and tasting fresh.

Internal use: Use in moderate amounts; boil or stir-fry.

External use: Use in moderate amounts; mash fresh and apply topically.

Processing: After catch, use fresh or dry-roast for medicinal use.

Effects: Tonifies the kidneys and strengthens yang, promotes lactation, dispels toxins.

Indications: Used for kidney deficiency with yang weakness, impotence, reduced breast milk in postpartum women, and skin/soft tissue issues such as rashes, boils, carbuncles, and dermatitis.

1) To treat impotence: (a) Fresh river shrimp 60 g, rinse, briefly boil in half a cup of yellow wine, then eat the shrimp and drink the wine once daily for 7 days (one course). (b) Fresh river shrimp with appropriate chives, stir-fried with a little oil and salt until cooked (as cited in Food, Medicine, and Prescriptions).

2) To treat blood and wind-related skin lesions: raw shrimp with yellow pigment, mashed and applied as a paste, replace daily (as cited in Binhuhu Jiefang prescriptions).

People with damp-heat diarrhea, boils with heat and pain, or itchy skin conditions should use with caution.

1. Shi Liao Ben Cao: โ€œIn children with facial swelling and redness, crush and apply to the affected area.โ€

2. Ben Cao Shi Yi: โ€œPrevents common poultry diseases.โ€
