Bamboo Knot Ginseng

Also known as: White Sanqi, Mingqi, Seven Leaves.

Nature and Taste: Sweet, slightly bitter, warm.

Meridian Associations: Liver, spleen, and lung channels.

Part Used: Dried rhizome of the Araliaceae family plant Panax japonicus C.A. Mey.

Bamboo Knot Ginseng appears slightly cylindrical, somewhat curved, sometimes with fleshy lateral roots. It ranges from 5 to 22 cm in length, with a diameter of 0.8 to 2.5 cm. Its surface is yellow or yellowish-brown, rough, with dense vertical wrinkles and root marks. Nodes are distinct, each node having a recessed stem scar. It is hard in texture, with a cross-section that is yellow-white to light yellow-brown, and yellow dotted vascular bundles arranged in a ring. The aroma is mild, taste is bitter, and then slightly sweet.
