Traditional Combinations and Formulas with Xu Changqing

1. For severe chest pain with impending collapse: Grind one liang (approx. 30-37g) of Guiduping (an older name for Xu Changqing) into powder. Soak one liang of Benzoin in wine, finely grind, remove residue, and simmer over low heat to form a paste. Combine the Guiduping powder with the Benzoin paste, and form pills the size of a wutong seed. Take ten pills with vinegar soup, regardless of time. (From Taiping Shenghuifang)

2. For toothache: Use five qian (approx. 15-18g) of dried Xu Changqing root. Wash thoroughly, add 1500 ml of water, and decoct until 500 ml remains. Alternatively, the root can be prepared as a powder. When pain occurs, take 90 ml of the liquid, first rinsing the mouth with the medicinal liquid for 1-2 minutes before swallowing. If using the powder, take 0.5 to 1 qian each time, twice daily. (From Quanchen Xuanbian: Oral Diseases)

3. For dysentery and enteritis: Use 1 to 2 qian (approx. 3-7g) of Lizhicao (another name for Xu Changqing, meaning 'dysentery-stopping herb'). Decoct in water and take once daily. (From Quanzhan Xuanbian: Infectious Diseases)
