Hawksbill Turtle Shell
Other Names: Wen Jia, Dai Dai.
Nature and Flavor: Sweet, cold.
Meridian Tropism: Primarily associated with the Heart (Hand Shaoyin) and Liver (Foot Jueyin) meridians.
Part Used: The dorsal scutes (shell plates) of the Hawksbill Turtle, a member of the Cheloniidae family.
Morphological Characteristics: This medicinal material consists of nearly circular, triangular, or polygonal plates, typically 10 to 20 centimeters long and 1.5 to 3 millimeters thick. The edges are thinner, with the center being slightly thicker. The surface presents as a dark brown, translucent substance, adorned with dark brown and milky-yellow patterns that are smooth and lustrous. The inner surface is densely covered with white streaks or spots, along with intersecting longitudinal and transverse grooves. It is tough and resilient, not easily broken, with a horny cross-section. It is odorless. Thicker plates with distinct patterns and semi-transparency are considered to be of superior quality.
Dosage and Administration of Hawksbill Turtle Shell
Dosage: 1 to 3 qians (approximately 3-9 grams). Most commonly incorporated into pills (wan) and powders (san). Always consult a qualified practitioner for precise dosage and suitability.
Preparation: Suspend the Hawksbill Turtle Shell upside down, then pour boiling vinegar over it. The shell plates will then gradually peel off one by one. Remove any residual flesh and wash clean to obtain the prepared material.
Functions and Indications of Hawksbill Turtle Shell
Functions: Clears heat and detoxifies, calms the Heart, and pacifies the Liver.
Indications: Traditionally used for conditions such as heat-induced delirium and disorientation (often with incoherent speech), childhood convulsions, and various skin conditions like boils, carbuncles, and toxic sores.
Formulas Involving Hawksbill Turtle Shell
① To treat acute wind syndrome and evil invasion, where one does not recognize people, with a pale face and cold limbs: Take 5 liang (ounces) of raw Hawksbill Turtle Shell (pounded into a fine powder), 5 liang of Benzoin Resin (boiled in wine until paste-like, then filtered through silk to remove dregs), 2 liang of Cinnabar (finely ground and levigated with water), 0.5 liang of Orpiment (finely ground), 1 liang of Amber (finely ground), 1 liang of Musk (finely ground), and 1 qian of Borneo Camphor (finely ground). Grind all the above ingredients until uniform. Combine with the Benzoin Resin paste to form pills the size of chicken's head fruits. Take 3 pills at any time, dissolved with a mixture of 3 ge (units) of child's urine and 0.5 ge of fresh ginger juice, warmed. (From "Sheng Hui Fang" - Hawksbill Turtle Shell Pill)
② To treat aphonia (loss of speech) due to wind stroke, mental confusion, or aphonia due to evil invasion: Take 0.5 liang each of Hawksbill Turtle Shell (shaved), Cinnabar (ground), Orpiment (ground), and White Mustard Seed, plus 0.25 liang of Musk (ground). Pound and sift the five ingredients into a fine powder, then grind them uniformly again. Separately, boil 1 liang of Benzoin Resin in wine within a silver or stone vessel to form a paste. ③ To treat measles with black, sunken lesions, which indicates heat in the Heart and blood stasis: Grind raw Hawksbill Turtle Shell and raw Rhinoceros Horn together to obtain 1 ge of juice. Add a small amount of pig's heart blood and five spoonfuls of Lithospermum Root decoction. Mix well and take warm. (From "Dou Zhen Lun")
④ To prevent and resolve measles toxins; when the epidemic is prevalent, take this. If not yet manifested, it resolves internally; if already manifested, lesions are sparse: Grind raw Hawksbill Turtle Shell and raw Rhinoceros Horn together, each yielding 1 ge of juice. ⑤ To treat tearing eyes due to wind, caused by deficiency heat in the Heart and Kidneys: Take 1 liang each of raw Hawksbill Turtle Shell and Antelope Horn, and one pair of "Stone Swallows" (Shi Yan Zi). Grind into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose with peppermint soup, once daily. (From "Fei Hong Ji")
