Sanmiao Wan: Benefits and Main Indications

Actions: Clears Heat and Dries Dampness.

Indications: This formula is primarily used for conditions arising from damp-heat descending to the lower body, which can manifest as numbness in both feet, or a burning sensation as if branded by fire.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) understands "damp-heat" as a pathogenic factor that can accumulate in the body, leading to a variety of symptoms. When this damp-heat descends, it often affects the lower limbs, causing discomfort and sensations like numbness or intense heat. PMID: 34005893

Phellodendron Bark (Huang Bai), a key ingredient in Sanmiao Wan, is renowned in TCM for its ability to clear heat and dry dampness, especially in the lower jiao (lower body cavity). Its therapeutic actions are supported by modern research exploring its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. PMID: 32009228 Atractylodes Rhizome (Cang Shu) further enhances the damp-drying effect, while Achyranthes Root (Chuan Niu Xi) guides the actions downwards and invigorates blood circulation in the lower limbs, alleviating numbness and pain. The synergistic combination targets the root cause of damp-heat stagnation. PMID: 29161726
